If you come to New York City, and are free between 10 am and 12:30 pm on a weekday, I recommend volunteering for the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, the largest soup kitchen in the Eastern US.  It is a joyous operation, and you’ll meet New Yorkers of all backgrounds, many of them retired.  I often am there when I have time in the middle of the day, and when they have enough people running the beverage department, they make me play the piano.  I prefer the food service.  The other day, a handsome young man said to me, out of nowhere, “Today is one year I have been off drugs!” with a big smile on his face.  Pure joy was coming out of him.
