Toxic Pesticides

Searching for bodies was called off temporarily in the tragic incident of the capsized ferry off the coast of the Philippines after it was discovered the ferry also carried cargo consisting of toxic pesticides. The pesticide in question was endosulfan, which the European Union and Cambodia has banned but we still use. It’s a potent neurotoxin. We should do more than just not swim with toxic pesticides–we should ban them completely.

A new report says there are dangerous chemicals in new shower curtains, and I couldn’t agree more.  I just got a new shower curtain and had to let it air outside for a few days first.And, we all need to be testing ourselves for these toxic chemicals and doing our best to rid our bodies of them.  A simple urine test can give us an idea of where to begin.  Here’s a list of the toxic chemicals in shower curtains.

Fascinating video from the New York Times on the growing fertilizer shortage, and possible solutions–including harvesting pig manure.  Is it a good idea?  But what’s in pig manure?  Are drug residues going to find that way into our corn?  Or are we going to get a richer mineral balance from switching to a more natural fertilizer, while Asia switches to synthetic NPK?  And what happens are the world increasingly wants to farm with NPK, the way we have?
